< + > Balancing Natural Treatments and Surgery for Orthopedic Conditions

In this interview, Meredith Warner, MD, Founder of Warner Orthopedics & Wellness, discusses ways to avoid medication and surgery for osteoarthritis and other common conditions. She does surgery much less often than most orthopedists. Whether someone uses surgery and medications or is trying to avoid them, the key to health is proper mindset, exercise, diet, and sleep—a combination she calls MEDS.

Medical school has always been a venue for teaching the use of medicines and surgery rather than healthy habits, Warner says. She is a maverick through and through; As a military surgeon and veteran, she learned that “it’s good to avoid war if at all humanly possible.” She takes the same unconventional approach to her patients.

Because Warner can’t explain all the aspects of healing through behavior and lifestyle in the clinic, and to reach a large audience beyond her own practice in Louisiana, she has published a book titled Bone on Bone: An Orthopedic Surgeon’s Guide to Avoiding Surgery and Healing Pain Naturally.

The book is based on exhaustive research, she says—research about natural ways of healing that medical schools don’t teach and that most doctors never seek out. As one example, she cites a longitudinal study showing that  70-80% of patients with certain shoulder problems can get well with just physical therapy, no surgery. In fact, surgery sometimes makes a problem worse. However, the whole reimbursement system for doctors is based on surgery and drugs, not healthy lifestyles.

There are many other fascinating insights in this interview, such as the high degress of false positives on MRIs, the common systemic problems that cause pain, and the role of processed foods in causing inflammation.
