< + > Time Saving Features in eClinicalWorks That Help Clinicians Be More Efficient

In a recent interview at the eClinicalWorks National Conference, Josh Baker, Operations Manager at Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio, reports on some time-saving features offered by the eClinicalWorks EHR. A combination of mobile device support, rules engines, and AI takes administrative burdens off of clinical and support staff alike.

The Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio has 12 locations in northwestern Ohio and sees about 900-1000 patients per day. They have used eClinicalWorks since 2006.

eClinicalMobile provides staff with access to patient information, schedules, and other information needed day to day. For instance, they can take pictures of a wound and upload them to the patient’s chart. Baker says, “Some staff don’t even touch the computer.”

eClinicalWorks helps staff create rules to control workflow, and embed the rules into the EHR. Patient registration and claims are examples of areas that can be directed by rules. For instance, a rule can check insurance eligibility during check-in and warn the staff that there’s a problem with coverage.

Patients now can provide information about their histories, upload photos of IDs, and take care of other tasks during check-in online at homes. This is more convenient for patients, as well as saving lots of time for staff. At each visit, the patient histories can populate forms automatically. Multiple family members can be combined into one account.

Numerous tasks that staff are used to carrying out will soon be done automatically by the EHR, such as calculating disability scores. The system also records each doctor’s preferences for medications and patient education handouts, letting other staff complete orders quickly without extra work on the doctor’s part.

Baker also referred to the value of retrieving patient records from other institutions through the PRISMA tool that’s also being enhanced with a number of new AI features that eClinicalWorks announced at the conference.

Baker also describes the benefits of attending the national conference, and some other new features described there.  Check out our wide ranging interview with Orthopaedic Institute of Ohio at the eClinicalWorks national conference to learn more.
