One-third of medical claims are denied due to missing patient info, according to Krista Hawk, SVP, Sales and Marketing at e4health. Hark and Todd Goughnour, VP, Health Information Management, discuss the value of data quality in this video.
Even more important than correct billing, Goughnour says, is making informed decisions for patients. A doctor can do serious harm by having the wrong information on a patient or even consulting the record for the wrong patient. AI also produces inaccurate models if it is based on bad data. And many non-clinical staff, such as billing and legal departments, need good data.
e4health works with more than 400 healthcare systems across the country, helping them migrate data and improve its data quality. They focus on medical coding and Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI).
A recent survey found that only 58% of health care institutions “are focused on data quality.” Additionally, 56% rate their data quality from low to medium.
Legacy systems have a big impact on quality. Goughnour points out that duplication increases the risk of malicious breakins. A clinical site might have 200 to 300 systems.
Some 58% still have data in legacy systems. While 60% of health care sites surveyed are handling the legacy data well by archiving it, the rest are just keeping data in old systems.
Hawk cites, as a sign of progress, that health care sites are hiring Chief Data Officers. Cost is the biggest barrier to migration, she says.
