In this interview, Joao Fontoura, MD, Associate Medical Director and Director of Healthcare Informatics at Suncoast Community Health Centers, explains why their FQHC chose Sunoh.ai for their scribe, and how they won the clinicians over to use it.
Located in Tampa, Florida, with a diverse population that includes many inner-city residents as well as migrant farmworkers, Suncoast was very price-conscious. Fontoura claimed that Sunoh.ai cost much less than other automated scribes. In addition, the integrations with eClinicalWorks clinched the deal.
After trying the system himself with his patient visits, he slowly introduced it to other doctors. Instead of mandating its use or applying pressure, he tried to generate FOMO (fear of missing out). He found a couple doctors open to the use of new technologies, and turned them into cheerleaders. At meetings, he would ask them to repeat their experiences with Sunoh.ai. Eventually, even the most recalcitrant doctors got curious, and were then persuaded to adopt it.
As for new doctors just joining the practice, he provides them with the scribe right away if they’re “tech-savvy” and seem comfortable with the EHR. For others, he’ll show the doctors some of the transcripts generated recently for him, then get them to to try the system. Some are instant “cheerleaders” after their first use.
It’s important, Fontoura says, to adapt the system to the clinician. Some don’t want to change their workflow much, so he suggests they use Sunoh.ai for a subset of features to start. Then, he can look to grow their use of it over time.
Benefits of Sunoh.ai, as summarized by Fontoura, is that it can “reduce click fatigue” and free the doctor from worrying with whether everything is captured. The system is particularly helpful for complex patients.
Fontoura also talks briefly about other new technologies at the conference: the Genie customer service platform and smart glasses with built-in camera and computer.
